The great debate between which is better, a tidy or messy desk, lives on. According to a new study, both have their benefits.
Research has found that those who keep their desk clean and tidy are more likely to eat healthier, and show more generosity and conventionality.
“Prior work has found that a clean setting leads people to do good things: Not engage in crime, not litter, and show more generosity,” according to a researcher from the Association for Psychological Science.
However, it’s not all bad for those of you who struggle to see your keyboard beneath piles of paperwork. Messy desks can inspire creativity.
“Disorderly environments seem to inspire breaking free of tradition, which can produce fresh insights.”
Therefore it seems, if you need to be innovative and think outside of the box, then relax, and let the clutter build while your imagination grows.
